Convergence
Transdisciplinary Collaboration
Are you ready to be part of something where you can bring your ideas to life?
Opening in Fall 2026 in the Creativity and Innovation District (CID), Convergence LLC is Virginia Tech’s newest living-learning community, bringing together students from all majors to explore big questions, connect across disciplines, and imagine new ways of thinking.
Through hands-on and creative experiences, you’ll engage with faculty fellows, student leaders, and peers in programs, workshops, and traditions that encourage you to see beyond traditional learning and discover fresh perspectives on your Virginia Tech journey.

Who is Convergence for?
Convergence is a place to pursue your passions, explore new perspectives, and take part in a community that values curiosity, creativity, and collaboration.

At the Heart of Convergence
Convergence is built around a shared academic experience that unites all students in the community. Every first-year student will take Great Ideas, a three-credit Pathways course designed to spark curiosity and help you explore the perspectives, passions, and forces shaping the world we live in today. This course provides a common foundation for the community and creates opportunities for discussion, reflection, and collaboration across majors.

Four Collective Houses
Beyond the classroom, every student will join one of four collective houses designed to be smaller communities within the larger Convergence experience. These houses give you a sense of identity and belonging, while also anchoring you to the activities offered in Convergence:
- Play: Combine games and learning
- Expression: Explore media and culture
- Transformation: Examine social change and impactful histories
- Craft: Turn ideas into realities in this maker house
Each house is supported by faculty fellows and student leaders who design meaningful programming, mentor students, and connect academic minors to lived experiences.
Welcome to CID
Convergence LLC is proud to call the Creativity and Innovation District (CID) its home. The CID is one of Virginia Tech’s most innovative residential spaces, designed for collaboration and creativity across disciplines.
Convergence students will live and learn in a community that offers makerspaces, performance studios, music practice rooms, classrooms, and flexible collaboration areas. These spaces will serve as the backdrop for workshops, projects, and traditions that connect academic learning with hands-on experience.
Alongside other LLCs in CID Convergence students will also benefit from shared events and building-wide programs hosted by CID’s Faculty Principal, Dr. Tim Baird.
By joining Convergence in CID, students don’t just live on campus they live at the center of Virginia Tech’s boldest experiment in creativity, innovation, and connection.
- Every first-year student will take Great Ideas, a three-credit Pathways course designed to spark curiosity and help you explore the perspectives, passions, and forces shaping the world we live in today.
- Students returning to Convergence in their second year and beyond will take part in a service-learning project designed to strengthen professional development, enhance leadership, and build valuable résumé experience.
- Each week, the entire Convergence community comes together for a signature tradition. This is a chance to build connections, engage in meaningful learning, and develop skills that will carry you beyond the classroom.
