Mozaiko

Intercultural Competence and Leadership

Mozaiko logo

In Mozaiko, we learn the world by living it.

Mozaiko is an intercultural living-learning community for students of any major, college, or academic year who are interested in community, culture, language, and intercultural engagement. Through shared experiences, events, and conversations, residents build meaningful connections, practice cultural humility, and develop the skills to engage across cultures. Mozaiko helps students become more thoughtful members of an increasingly interconnected world, and prepares them for a lifetime of global engagement.

The Mozaiko experience invites students to:

  • Build a sense of belonging, locally and globally
  • Learn with faculty, campus partners, visiting global leaders, and one another
  • Develop global leadership skills that prepare them for career success

Sponsoring Department: Cranwell International Center

Mozaiko also has meaningful partnerships that support the program's facilitation:

Reflect, Engage, Lead

Residents explore the cultures, values, and traditions that shaped them by sharing their stories with the community.

Signature Programs

  • Culture Canvas: Residents share their cultures, identities, and experiences through food, art, music, or a photo story. Every resident gets to see their own background as culture.

Residents build community and a sense of belonging while learning with peers, faculty, campus partners, and global leaders.

Signature Program

  • Cultural Highlights: The anchor event for the community, co-led by student leaders and a campus partner such as Modern and Classical Languages faculty, Global Education, a culture and community center, or another LLC. Each pairs cultural context (history, language, values, daily life) with a hands-on activity like art, dance, performance, or games.

Students develop global leadership skills and prepare for career success through programs, service, and leadership roles.

Signature Program

  • Global Leadership Development: Skill-building sessions shaped by student interest, such as communicating across difference, managing conflict, collaborating, event planning, preparing for study abroad, and communicating your CliftonStrengths.

Student Engagement

Mozaiko is more than a place to live. It is a community where every resident helps shape the experience, and joining means committing time and curiosity to it.

Mozaiko students are expected to:

  • Attend Mozaiko Welcome Week programming (first-year students)
  • Attend at least two Cultural Highlights each semester
  • Attend at least two Global Leadership Development sessions each semester
  • Share at, or co-host, at least one Culture Canvas or Snaps and Snacks during the year
  • Participate in the Mozaiko Semester Celebrations

Please consider these expectations carefully before applying, to make sure Mozaiko is the right fit for you.

Students who want a more active role can help shape the Mozaiko experience while building valuable leadership skills. Opportunities range from mentoring and marketing to planning and assessing programs. Students can also apply to join Mozaiko's Core Leadership Team:

  • President (1)
  • VP of Mentoring (1), with a Mentoring Committee (3 to 4) and Peer Mentors (15 to 20)
  • VP of Programming (1 to 2), with a Programming Committee (3 to 4)
  • VP of Marketing and Outreach (1), with a Marketing and Outreach Committee (3 to 4)
  • Secretary (1)

The Core Leadership Team is advised by Mozaiko's professional staff Program Director.

Mozaiko connects students with faculty and experts who bring new perspectives into the community. Through Virginia Tech faculty, including partners in Modern and Classical Languages, and visiting scholars from around the world, students engage in conversations, learn from diverse expertise, and explore global topics beyond the classroom.
